| - I am on the hunt for a new gym, and before purchasing my own elliptical machine, decided to check out Keystone Health Club. I live in Forest Hills and anticipated KHC to be about an 8 minute drive, but unfortunately, some of the lights around this industrial complex are quite long, and it took me over 10 minutes to get here.
Thankfully, I had read the directions on KHC's website or else I would have never found this place. There are little signs to guide the way as well. However, even with all the directions and signs, I was still a little terrified pulling into the dimly lit garage. I imagined myself getting murdered as I walked from the car to the gym and wished that I had some mace in my pocket.
Once inside, I requested my free visit at the front desk. (I had previously called and asked if this was an option, which isn't listed online.) I felt that my greeting was a bit unprofessional and haphazard. All three employees were very young - high school age for one or two of them even - and there didn't seem to be much new member/visitor protocol. A couple current members even cut in front of me while I was speaking with one of the employees, which I thought was very rude. Unfortunately, I didn't receive a tour of the gym and was not made aware of any perks or classes offered if I chose to join.
I had arrived at the gym at 7:30pm, knowing that the gym closed at 9pm. However, I learned when I arrived that the gym actually closes at 8:30pm in the summer, which was disappointing since the weekend hours are already so limited. I quickly put my bag away and checked out the ellipticals, a gazelle-like machine, and some weight machines. I liked all the machines, but the energy was just so low in the gym that I felt very unmotivated to push myself to the next level. I was the only person using a single piece of cardio equipment, and only one very elderly man was using the weight machines while I was there.
I really wish that I had felt comfortable at this gym, but I really did not, especially at $45/month. The machines are great, but the employees, the classes, and the overall vibe just aren't what I'm looking for.
