  • Although I live in Toronto, I decided to stay here for a three-day convention I attended instead of driving every day. Quite possibly the worst hotel I have ever stayed at, and I have travelled often. For a start, the people at the front desk acted as if they didn't know the meaning of "check in". One person wanted to pay cash and that threw them for a loop they never recovered from. Several people in our group had their bills screwed up, with no apology. One lady was triple-charged on her credit card and it took her months to get her money back. The room was clean and the maid was very nice, the only bright spot in this place. Bathroom was tired but clean. For some odd reason they took a medium-sized room and put two queen (or maybe king) beds in that space, resulting in extremely cramped quarters. You had to walk sideways almost anywhere in the room to get around the furniture. For two people there was only one chair in the room, but the front desk did begrudgingly send us another, which we had to wedge between the two giant beds. There were about 6 large pillows on each bed, so I had to throw several of them on the floor to be comfortable, causing even more congestion when walking in the room. The room, and indeed the whole hotel were blinding hot. I mean really hot, everyone was dripping with sweat for the three days. Another phone call to the desk brought a man to the door who was not surprised, he just informed us the air vent and machinery were broken. He spent five minutes fiddling with the vents etc. with no result, then scarpered when I wasn't looking. Water in the fridge was $4 for a small bottle. We left it there just on principle. The restaurant: Dinner: Blah food, nothing fresh, mostly canned and frozen. For $17 for fish and chips I expected real potatoes, not the frozen crap that arrived. Nearby table got a hair in their food. Service was slow and careless. Due to the location of the hotel there is nothing else to walk to so we were trapped. Breakfast: I went to the restaurant to get a carafe of coffee (about five cups) which I heard was possible. The waitress gave me about 4 little milkettes, and refused to give me more without charging me an exorbitant amount of money. Nasty attitude. The buffet breakfast, which we had later, was overpriced, with very little choice and once again made from frozen or canned stuff. The omelet (only option) was dry, and watching it being dumped into the warming pan from a great height by the kitchen staff made it even less appetizing. You can get a coffee from the front desk any time (I think), but they actually charge for it. Give me a break! Catered lunches during our meeting were boring. The only good thing about the catered food were the excellent selection of drinks to go with it, and the teas. During the three-day convention we were in different meeting rooms and each one was hotter than the other. We were told that the heat could not be adjusted from an uncaring staff who had heard it all before and couldn't be bothered. Go there at your own risk, it was very unpleasant.
