| - I've rented from rental car companies at Phoenix international airport (PHX) before and they have a good assortment of national car brands that you know and love (or hate). With my return trip to Arizona the second time this year, it was good to drive with Alamo.
I rented with Alamo rental car, just because I found a good rate with Hotwire.com. It was about $20/day for 4 days and it was nice. All other companies at the Phoenix airport were pricing at a minimum $25/day and I wanted to be budget friendly. Upon arrival to PHX airport car rental facility, the facility was pretty epic and the counters were on the 3rd floor and the rental cars were on the 2nd floor - at least with Alamo. The guy at the counter persuaded me to upgrade to a full size car, since I told him that I was going to the Grand Canyon and needed more power in the mountains. I tended to agree with him, but in hindsight, I probably could have saved that extra $30. I'm not sure that I was a sucker or not, but it did make the trip a little better knowing I was equipped right. I opted for the LDW insurance for the car, as well as the road side assistance. The total was astounding to me, but I was reminded that I was here for 4 days, so the amount was justified. Or at least, I thought it was. The overall experience here at Alamo was alright and good. The customer service here was quite nice and they were happy to help me with my problem that I had going with my rental, so I had to swap/exchange it for another one. All was well after that.
There was a mishap during my trip that was taken care of and that helped me avoid something larger, I think. Glad I read some online articles before stuff got to happening. Basically, the low tire pressure thing popped up when the MPH speedometer was. It wouldn't go away. Luckily, I caught it in time and decided to go back to Alamo at PHX airport to exchange the rental. Unfortunately for me, I was near Flagstaff when this happened. I'm glad that nothing happened on the 2 1/2 hour drive back down I-17 south while this low tire pressure thing happened. I could have driven on it like nothing happened, but better to be safe than sorry.This Alamo rental car location is conveniently located near the Phoenix international airport (PHX). It's probably about 5 miles from the terminal itself and you'd need to ride the consolidated rental car shuttle to and from the airport, if you are renting from one of the national rental car companies based near PHX. Like most car rental companies out there, they require your driver's license and valid credit card for purchase. Prices for rental cars can be inexpensive, but adding on rental insurance and other products can get pricey. Best bet is is to check 3rd party sites and compare rates.
For the most part, my rental here at PHX airport with Alamo car rental was pretty good. Too bad it took me 2 1/2 hours out of my way to get me where I needed to go. The first car I got was a Dodge Charger. It was really smooth, but felt large and had some blind spots. Thankfully, I have skills of a great driver to navigate the streets of Phoenix and on interstates 10, 17, and 40. I personally felt comfortable with an economy or a midsize car, which they gave me the 2nd time: Nissan Sentra, which was great. The ride was good with the Nissan and it was pretty neat driving the Dodge Charger. While the experience of the low tire pressure was a little disheartening and the fact that I had to drive 2 1/2 hours back from Williams to Phoenix airport to exchange vehicles is something I won't forget - at least in the foreseeable future. At least, I didn't have to pay for the gas in the Dodge Charger and responsible for the gas in the Nissan Sentra. That saved me a little bit of money.
3.0 stars for the inconvenience. Not sure if it's Alamo's fault for not checking the tire pressure before putting it back into the inventory for rental. 4.0 stars for the service and exchange. 4.0 stars for the smooth driving experience.
