| - The Tropicana was not the worst, but definitely not the best hotel I've stayed at in Vegas. Upon arriving in Vegas in the morning, my girlfriend and I decided to check our luggage by the lobby with a very friendly bellhop and hit the Strip for some drinks and food. When we returned - albeit a bit buzzed - the check-in was a nightmare as our reservation was nowhere to be found and we spent thirty minutes tracking down an e-mail and making calls to Expedia. This may or may not have been the Tropicana's fault, but eventually the staff was able to assist us after they themselves got ahold of Expedia and confirmed the reservation.
Finally in the room - getting upstairs takes at least ten minutes from the lobby, so if you're physically challenged in any way or just impatient, this may not be the place for you - we enjoyed the softness of the bed and the relatively quiet air conditioning. The TV was stacked with channels and the washrooms were very clean. No complaints about the room!
On our last night in Vegas, we decided to enjoy ourselves in the hotel and do some gambling and drinking. The lingering smell of smoke was more prevalent than at other casinos I've visited and, depending on where you are, can really bug the senses. It was unfortunate the bar closed relatively early, as we would have opted for another drink before going back upstairs. On the plus side, our visit to Robert Irvine's Public House that morning was a total hit - this place is a must if you're looking for excellently-prepared food and friendly service!
All in all, I'd say we got a sweet deal on accommodations considering this was in August and prices can skyrocket compared to, let's say, the winter or spring. The hotel itself is nothing special, but the rooms were clean and comfortable. 3 stars out of 5, but if you hunt around, you might be able to find better deals at a better hotel.
