| - So, I've never had Arepas. I've had Mexican Gorditas and Salvadorian Pupusas... Arepas seem to be similar to these. Sadly, I'd take a gordita or a pupusa any day of the week over an arepa. Not that there's anything wrong with arepas, they just didn't have the same addictive side-effect their Mexican and Salvadorian counterparts did.
Now, to the actual experience here; mine was fine. Just fine. Nothing bad, nothing good. It was just fine. I did screw up a bit as I only noticed the big boards right above the food prep area thinking it was a very limited selection. Only after ordering did I realize that they had a much larger selection of arepa option on the back wall.
I ended up ordering Reina Pepeada arepa and another one that was just a corn disc with cheese (I can't remember the name. I didn't have to wait very long for either of them, so that was good.
The Reina Pepeada was literally overflowing with the filling, which tasted like a very bland chicken/mayo salad. I didn't get much of the avocado, much less cilantro. It was a massive portion and I didn't finish it. The other one was pretty bad. But I think that's the way it's supposed to be. The corn disc itself was so dry it was hard to eat without liquid. It simply tasted like a very thick dry tortilla with a little bit of white cheese on top.
Overall, it was ok. I didn't' dislike anything, but I didn't really like anything enough to be all like, "duuuuuude, let's totally go get some arepas!!!".
My biggest gripe is how extremely overpriced everything seemed. Again, Gorditas and Pupusas seem to have more character, flavor, and deliciousness and they're about 1/4 of the cost of the arepas here. They seem to use the same ingredients, so I do not know why the price discrepancy. The price points for all the products and how bland my food was, are the sole reasons why I will probably not return.
