  • Throughout music history, some smaller historic venues have not only been known to be on the cutting edge of introducing of up-and-coming bands, but contributing to tectonic shifts in our culture and musical tastes. CBGB's, Max's Kansas City, The Stone Pony, The Troubadour, Whiskey A Go-Go, etc. In Wisconsin, the Cactus Club in Milwaukee comes to mind. Hopefully, we in Wisconsin have another go to venue to see groups on the rise that may someday not only become well known, but icons. The Frequency is a smaller bar in downtown Madison that isn't fancy. It isn't flashy. Hell, if you just sat at the front bar and didn't know about the back room, it would seem to be a dive-like, semi-grungy (Not in the music way) place to get a beer and a shot. As stated by others, the prices are absolutely reasonable and selection decent. So here's my experience at The Frequency. I was there to cover the Lydia Loveless performance in September for a music site I write for out of Nashville. I was suppose to be on the infamous "List". Uncharacteristically, I missed the opening song due to thinking the show started later. From the front bar you could hear the band clearly, but it was not overbearing or obnoxious. The young lady handling the door sympathized with me and my predicament. Between first texting and then calling my editor she pointed to the bar at the owner and said to talk with him. The owner Darwin listened to my plight and called over to her to band me to get into the show without any judgement or second guessing his decision, for which I will be forever grateful! The back room is very small and 200 people packed in is very tight. No where to sit, it's all standing room only at this venue. I was amazed by the quality of the sound man, Loveless and her band sounded amazing! Let me re-state that again, the sound coming from the stage and back room was out of this world amazing! I've since gone back and looked over the bars music schedule and as someone that it's my business to keep a pulse on the music industry, the groups being booked into The Frequency are top shelf acts to keep your ears on in the future. So if you love being on the cutting edge of the music scene and meeting bands/artists that may one day be famous (Or infamous, it's your call), then I suggest if you live in Madison that you frequent The Frequency.you crazy music gormandizers...The Frequency is doing what it can to bring you quality music!
