I worked next door at Wychwood Open Door drop-in center so as partners with the Stop I got to come by here. Nothing makes a Montrealer - albeit a temporary one - miss Montreal more, than visiting a Toronto farmers market. For 3 years I did my weekly groceries at Jean Talon Market and so to come to a farmers market like this, is quite the sad experience. There is little selection in produce, barely any diversity in clientele (all white and middle aged) and the price reflects the lack of competition. I think the most interesting thing about the barns farmers market is that the local city counselor has a couch where you can sit and talk to him. I'd love to ask him so why does Toronto not have farmers market that can rival neither San Francisco not Montreals when its richer in cultural diversity? And why does the Stop have a farmers market thats out of the price point of the people its supposedly helping be food independent? This farmers market is the perfect emblem of Champagne Socialism.
