  • We went to Spur Cross today as a reward for my niece who was able to raise her grades in math this semester. The ride was safe and fun, a great way to spend an afternoon. They provided a helmet for my niece, and also gave us a treat for the horses (for the end of the ride). Our guide Penny was top-notch and really cool, she grew up around horses and really knows her craft. She kept a close eye on my niece and her horse, and made sure everything was safe and fun. We also met Gilbert the pig who we found in his shed, sleeping, probably having a dream about some mud hole and all the food he could munch on. They have several animals actually, aside from the horses who are the main attraction. During the ride we also saw several rabbits and we were told that they often see deer in the area. The scenery alone was worth the drive. I read one review mentioning the dirt road, but I had no problem in my front wheel drive vehicle with a mere 5.5" ground clearance. When we went there today, the dirt road was still damp from the recent rains. It is a pretty hard packed road, so I don't think any car would have a problem. Thanks to our guide Penny, and horses Tadpole, Nate and Destiny, we all had a great time. I would not hesitate to recommend Spur Cross Stables to anyone who wants to try something a little different, or to anyone who wants to see a bit more of Arizona's beautiful desert. Update Feb 2016: My niece and I went back and took the 30 minute intro ride, which was as fun as the first time we went back in 2012. Even though it was just 2 riders in the group (my niece and I), nothing was rushed and we had a great time. I got to ride Nate again, and we saw Destiny as well. Sadly, after 19 years, Gilbert the pig went to the "great pig pen in the sky" as I was told by the old cowboy that runs the front desk. The guides are still entertaining, the horses are ready to go, and as long as the weather is nice, you can't beat Spur Cross Stables for a fun get away.
