| - After nearly three years I found myself in the same hotel. Back in 2012 it was not only my first time at this hotel, but my first time in a Hyatt Place. Since then I've stayed in many Hyatt Place properties, and this one, like all those that came before it, are cookie-cutter identical from the lobby to the room.
Booking:
When I booked my room this time I noticed there were two room options - one listed as "standard" and the other listed as "view." View is listed online as having "an attractive view of PNC Park." No other differences between the two types of rooms were listed online, which was expected as Hyatt Places are all the same. There was no price difference between standard and view, though I noticed online for some dates view was not listed implying a sell out of PNC facing rooms I guess.
Parking:
We drove in to the hotel. To get into the parking lot that is private for the hotel you have to have a room key so we parked at the door and went to check in. When checking in we were given a paper to place on the dash and a swipe card (our room key) to open the lot gate. The galley host told us however there were no parking spaces left so he wouldn't charge us the $19 nightly rate for either night of our stay. And no parking there was. Good thing we drive a Jeep because once in the parking lot we parked in such a place that we had to drive up a curb and on onto an island of rocks. See my pic!! At least they were accommodating to not mind us parking there and to give it for free.
Check-in:
I checked in around 1:25am on a Saturday morning (having booked a Friday night reservation). When I arrived there were two drinking guests talking to one of the two galley hosts. The other galley host checked me in immediately and efficiently, however he did not recognise my elite status with Hyatt, he did not confirm my requested bed type, and he didn't verbally tell me my room number. The host did tell us breakfast was till 9:30am (which is incorrect - it's to 10am on weekends and 930 on weekdays).
I was given room 619. It was on the second to highest floor so they honored my high floor request. They also honored my away from elevator request. I was excited to see what my PNC view was, but sigh... See my pic: This is what a Hyatt elite member gets when booking a "view" room described online as having "an attractive view of PNC Park." The view of a parking structure! Room 619 is on the rear of the hotel facing north. PNC Park is to the east. That made my view be of the West General Robinson St Garage and I-279.
Room:
My room was your typical Hyatt Place room, which I'm perfectly fine with - cookie cutter boring, but efficient, spacious, and comfortable. Free WiFi. Coffee station with real ceramic mugs. Desk and wheeling desk chair. Chaise lounge couch with ottoman divided by a half wall from the king bed. Walk in shower and toilet in a separate room - sink in the main room. TV swivels to face bed or couch. Plenty of plugs by the bed - two on one side and one on there other. Four by the desk and two behind the desk on the coffee center. Shampoo and conditioner are provided but no body wash or lotion is given in the room.
Staff:
Housekeeping did a good job and were around earlier in the day (10am). One morning I needed extra towels and when I called Guest Services for them they were brought up to me in fewer than 5 minutes.
Location:
The location is perfect. The hotel is on the North Shore. Directly across the street from the hotel is my favorite thing - access to the Three Rivers Heritage Trail and North Shore Riverfront Park. Just walk out of the hotel, cross N Shore Dr and walk right into a waterfall water feature, grass, and cement biking trails. PNC Park and Heinz Field are steps away as well. The waterfront view is just gorgeous - it contains bridges and a downtown view. There is also a bike share docking station right across the street with a good amount of bikes - even on a holiday weekend there were still 5 docked around noon. You can also walk across the bridge to downtown from very near the hotel if you want to.
Just like three years ago however Hyatt Places in general, and apparently now this one specifically, remain one of the least rewarding Hyatt hotels for an elite member to stay in - hardly any of the elite benefits apply to Hyatt Places - even the ones that cost Hyatt little to nothing to provide (i.e., the best room available upon arrival, nightly room refresh). And apparently even the ones you do pay for: view room...
For room and location I'll definitely be back to this property on a future stay.
Update: Every time you stay at a Hyatt you get an email survey to complete afterwards. I got one on this stay, and mentioned some of the above points. I received a very nice email from the Hotel Manager just two days later. The email was personal, very apologetic, well written, and resolved the issues for me.
