  • I found Lilly completely serendipitously as I was showing my friend around Tremont and, being the dessert suckers that we are, we stepped inside. Game over. Don't let the hot pink motifs fool you - these chocolates and spirits are for everyone. The first thing we saw walking in was actually not decadent chocolate (although we definitely smelled its lovely scent first), but two walls of shelves filled with beer, wine, mead, cider, hibiscus liqueur... any type of alcohol that could potentially be matched to the chocolates nearby. They also serve a smattering of other treats like brownies, cookies, chocolate bars, and drinking chocolate (intrigued?). We asked the employees whether they could help us find a chocolatey match if we picked out a drink, and they happily obliged. Our original plan was to just get two truffles to try with our Necromangocon Mead. But at $2.50 per chocolate, we figured the bottle would definitely last us through a small box (6 pieces) at $13. Picking those six pieces was as stressful as a multiple test question where you've got a 50/50 chance of getting it right but are equally unsure about both of the answer choices. Especially since this isn't something we could splurge on every week. Eventually we settled with a pretty good mix of dark and white chocolates wrapped up in a sleek little black box. My favorites were the Frou-Frou, which has a nice, creamy undertone of passion fruit, and the Red Planet, dairy-free and with the subtlest hint of strawberry. The Hot Llama is a spicy little devil, perfect for people who like desserts that bite back. The designs are quite pretty, but Chocolatier Blue in the California Bay Area still wins in the aesthetics category. One thing I really appreciate is that they have a guide that describes what's in each truffle as well as what it looks like so you can match them up back home for your picture and eating pleasure. I can see more chocolate and alcohol nights in my future (on the days I forget how much student debt I'm in at least), and I know where my supply is coming from. On a nice day, I'd definitely recommend staying a while at the indoor picnic tables and enjoying your treats in full view of envious passerby and the sun.
