| - This is an amazing hidden GEM of a hike! It goes by the Anniversary Mine and to the Lovell Wash Narrows. First of all, I want to say thanks to Norm K. of Las Vegas. He is a Master Hiker of Las Vegas, extremely knowledgeable and our guide for the day. I've been on another hike with Norm and both times he talked throughout the hike about the surroundings... right down to the plants and the history. Thanks Norm!
Anniversary Narrows is not even listed on the Lake Mead topo map. It is located on privately owned land, which hikers are allowed to use. On the property is a mine that was in full operation in the 1920's that mined for borax. To get there, take the I-15 North to Lake Mead Parkway exit and head east for 17 miles to Northshore Road. Before you get to Northshore Road you enter the Lake Mead Recreation Area where you pay an entrance fee. Make a quick left on on Northshore Road and park on the left side of the road at mile marker 16, onto Callville Wash Road, the north side. If you have a high clearance vehicle, you can actually drive right up to the Anniversary Narrows entrance. If you don't, park just as you turn onto Callville Road. From there, it would be about a 7 mile round trip hike. Or just keep driving up the rough road and park anywhere off to the side. On our hike, Norm drove up the road almost 2 miles, making our hike an easy 3.6 mile round trip.
Once you park, continue walking up the dirt Callville Wash Road until you reach the Y. Stay to the left onto Anniversary Mine Road (Road 94a). This road will wrap around the mountain and head to the right as you reach the mining tunnels 2 miles from the first parking lot. I found this section very interesting in the rock formations and the remains of the mining tunnels, ore car tunnel and rail. Keep going and before you know it, you reach the Lovell Wash Narrows entrance at 2.6 miles where I found myself even more amazed as I passed on through! I could only imagine the years of water erosion it took to form this fabulous passage. Unfortunately, it's less than a half mile long of twisting in between the 100 foot canyon walls... so take your time to take it all in. On the way back, we checked out the Rock-nettle plants growing on the canyon walls. I even mined some gypsum rock. Then as we were driving back to the hotel, we saw a small group of Big Horn Sheep just off Northshore Road. Even before I reached the hotel, I was already thinking about going back to hike the Anniversary Narrows again!
