| - In 2010, we went to see the Phoenix Symphony doing the music of Led Zeppelin and Queen. We went because we are huge Zeppelin fans and Randy Jackson was doing the leads for the Zeppelin tunes. We remembered the old Long Island days of Randy Jackson and Zebra kicking out great covers. We expected disappointment from the Queen vocalist because, as my then-teenage daughter put it, "no one can do Freddy." When Brody Dolyniuk started singing, we were stunned at his talent. He actually can do Freddy. I remember asking, "why isn't this guy famous?" We also wondered why Brody wasn't doing the Led Zeppelin songs.
I looked Brody up online and found out he was the lead singer of a Vegas cover band called Yellow Brick Road. We live in Phoenix, but we were regularly going to Vegas often for a business conference. I insisted on checking out Yellow Brick Road the next time we were there and then continued enjoying YBR whenever we went to Vegas. We were disappointed when Brody announced he was leaving YBR and moving to L.A., and we made a special trip to Henderson to see Brody's finale with YBR at the Henderson Pavilion.
When we learned about the formation of Zeppelin U.S.A., we knew we would have to see a show. We would have traveled to do it, but ZUSA came to Phoenix last night for a show at the Van Buren. We gathered eight of our friends and the ten of us upgraded to our own section in the Mezzanine. First of all, the Van Buren is a great venue. But what was really magical was the music. These four musicians were nothing short of incredible. I know I am not the first to say it, but it is worth repeating: If you close your eyes at a ZUSA show, you think you are at a Zeppelin concert. Every song was amazing and every minute of the show was a complete blast. I have to mention that before ZUSA played "Thank You," Brody said that it was his wedding song and also Pat Leon's (the drummer) wedding song. Well, almost 33 years ago, "Thank You" was our wedding song, and last night we got to dance to it like we did then.
This post would not be complete without mentioning the immense talent of each and every musician on that stage. Jonathan Gilcrest plays multiple instruments and plays them masterfully. Steve Zukowsky ripped on the guitar and took us back to the prime of Page. Someone wrote that Pat Leon would have made Bonham proud and I agree.
This was a great concert at a great venue.
