I got into a seafood kick and convinced a coworker to tag along. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of non fast-food seafood places in Tempe. Google Maps pointed out King's Fish House.
The menu looks amazing. However lunch during the work week isn't the time to crack shells or have a food coma over an over indulgence. I had fried oysters on the brain and seriously considered several of the 7 or so different raw oysters (the Tempe menu is a little different from the one online).
We started with the fried oyster appetizer. The 5-6 pieces were lightly deep fried and were really oily. The breading didn't have a chance to stay on for very long but the oysters themselves were very tasty. The cocktail sauce was light and the tartar sauce was average. The spicy garlic sauce in a bottle at the table added a little nice kick.
Coworker ordered the skewered scallops and shrimp. They were overcooked. A scallop was cut in half with a fork and it sprung back into place like rubber. The shrimp was dry even with half the shell still on it. The blackened 5-6oz Atlantic salmon (Farmed Cypress Island Salmon) was half good and half very dry and overcooked. A few minutes after ordering, I had a feeling I should have ordered the swordfish. However it was seasoned well, was tasty and had a nice charred flavor to it. The grilled zucchini was very good. But again only half of the very unevenly sliced pieces were grilled - the ungrilled pieces were a bit undercooked (not really that big of a deal) and seemed to have missed all of the seasoning, too. The creamy-looking garlic mashed potatoes looked as if they were plain but had the perfect amount of garlic flavor to it.
There was a little bit of a wait between drinks/appetizer and the main dishes but the service was very good and our server was very attentive. The restaurant is spacious with high ceilings and gave it a roomy feeling.
I've noticed that this place seems to be evenly hit and miss with Yelpers (+grain of salt). The oyster selection will bring me back for another go but having all of our main dishes overcooked was really disappointing.
