  • I come to Vegas a lot and I've stayed at lots of hotels all along the strip. My usual favorite is the Palazzo. Since I came here during the week of CES, an electronic's trade show, all the major hotels were booked so I had trouble finding a nice hotel with rooms available. The Tropicana was one option that I found for a reasonable price on the strip so I booked it. Since I read about all the recent renovations on Yelp and Trip Advisor, I was expecting to be pleasantly surprised. When I checked in, the guy who checked me into my room was cold, unwelcoming, and possibly racist. I handed him my ID and he took a while to find my reservation. Here's a snippet from our conversation: ME: (handing him ID) Hi! HIM: (accepts ID in dead silence and doesn't look up) ME: (waiting...waiting...waiting...thinking that the silence is getting a little awkward and uncomfortable) So I read on Yelp and Trip Advisor that you guys recently renovated. Could I get a room in Paradise Tower? HIM: What's your REAL name? (He emphasized the "real.") ME: (Panicking and thinking...que? Huh? WTF?) Exactly what it says on my ID HIM: Are you sure your name isn't ::insert some random Asian name, very traditional Asian name. I believe it was Wing Fang something...:: ME: Uh...yes, I'm sure. I've got other cards if you want to take a look. (silently thinking how offensive this whole transaction is going, but fighting the urge to judge him for being racist until he says something else offensive.) HIM: (More silence) Oh. Here it is. I found your reservation. I got a 2nd floor room in Paradise Tower, room 228. It's convenient to stay there because it's right by the casino entrance. My check-in experience was less than stellar but I was willing to let it go since I wanted to enjoy my trip stress-free and this guy already set a negative tone for me. The room was modern and not too cramped. We got a crappy view of the fans on a roof but we didn't care since we didn't plan on staying in the room much anyways. My one major complaint is that their housekeeping really needs to step it up on the cleaning. They're not very detail oriented. There was A LOT of hair covering the lounge seat in the corner from previous guests. It was long hair too, so it wasn't like they couldn't see it. That was gross. They really should've used a lint roller or vacuum to get rid of that. GROSS! Same issue in the bathroom. There was hair covering the corners of the bathroom from previous guests. I know it wouldn't be because housekeeping was rushing to prepare a room for us or anything like that. We didn't try to do an early check-in. We checked in after their official check-in time. They just need to have higher standards for housekeeping in general. The good points would be that the beds are very comfortable. One thing I usually hate about hotels is that the pillows they provide are too soft and provide no neck support whatsoever. That's not an issue here. Their pillows are firm enough for me and the sheets were clean. Another thing I usually dislike about hotels is that the showers don't have enough water pressure. I hate standing there forever to try to rinse shampoo out of my hair. The shower here has good water pressure and it's adjustable to suit your preference. Despite the unpleasant check-in experience and lack of detail to cleaning, my stay here was good overall. All the people I interacted with on the casino floor, aside from the guy who checked me in, were friendly and helpful. The room was comfortable for our stay and it's close to the Las Vegas strip. I recommend staying here if you can find a good deal. I wouldn't pay more than $120 for a room here during the normal season when there's no major conventions in town.
