  • The Royal Palms is easily the most magical and memorable hotel I've stayed at, anywhere in the world. The Spanish Revival architecture, lush gardens, colorful tiles ascending the stairwells, and labyrinthine walkways combine to form a palatial, magical realism aesthetic resembling something Gabriel Garcia Marquez might have dreamt up. A [gothic fiction] summary of the stay: The bellhop greets you by name. You haven't checked in to your room yet, and this is your first time staying at the hotel. "Welcome back!" they say. You follow the warm, seductive aroma of poppies to your casita. The door is ajar. You enter and instinctively sit on the leather armchair, as though you have done so a thousand times before. You walk to the fountain courtyard. You start to walk back to your casita, but suddenly, you're in a courtyard again. It's the same courtyard you were in a moment ago, but the fountain is gone. And the trees have moved. There is no courtyard. A grackle squawks for crumbs. You stumble upon the pool area. You see the same guests you saw yesterday. Their smiles comfort you until you remember that you just checked in today. The guests wave at you in unison. You wander around for awhile. You're going in circles, but the landscaping keeps changing. You hear a voice whisper "turn left." There's no right turn, and when you try to turn around, you're against a wall that wasn't there before. You arrive home. You receive an e-mail from The Royal Palms: "We look forward to your upcoming stay!" You search for your suitcase, which you were holding a second ago. It's outside, next to the street curb. A black car pulls up. The passenger door is already open, and the scent of poppies wafts in the air. You get in, abidingly, and return to the airport. I may still be in a trance :)
