| - Advice-stay away, no amount of savings is worth the trip.
DAY 1
My 11 year old son received some money over Christmas to get his first computer. He had a few hundred dollars saved up to contribute as well. We are a Mac family, but I wasn't sure if we could afford one for my son. My last computer was a refurbished Mac from Computer Trends and it's been wonderful so I was on the hunt. I came across an ad on Kijij that this location posted about a refurbished macbook that was in our price range. We arrived with cash on hand to look at the computer advertised.
The employee who offered us assistance convinced me to purchase a Dell laptop instead. He said the mac I was looking at was no good. We were not given the opportunity to try the Dell out, but he was a smooth talker and really seemed to know what he was talking about, through in a few bells/whistles and I was sold. I inquired about other places close to look and price compare and he said there was nothing close by but the computer would sell fast. I felt pressure so my son handed over his cash. We were never told there was a zero return policy. I was given a receipt and told to come back the next day to pick up the laptop.
DAY 2
I picked up the computer the following morning. It was another staff member working. He was friendly, but did give me an opportunity to look it over. I probably should've asked. I got home, and turned it on, only to discover it had a broken key and was a piece of crap. I pulled out my receipt and called the store to say I wasn't happy and wanted to return it. Turns out the small print on the receipt says no returns, but I explained the situation to the staff member and he said he would make an exception based on the fact it was less than 24 hours from purchase. I told him I would be in the next day, because the location is over 40 minutes from my house. He said he would be working so that's not a problem.
DAY 3
I show up to return the computer, receipt in hand. My son is sick from school in the car. The man I spoke to on the phone was there and he did remember our conversation, but said he needed the boss to sign off. Turns out the boss, also the owner, was Jimmy P, the same man who sold me the computer. He refused to take the return and said only exchanges would be accepted. They had nothing else in our price range, so this would require me settling for the computer he told me was crap, or spending more money. I had already been told a return was okay and drove 40 minutes with a sick child to make this happen. Naturally, I was upset and accused him of scamming us. He didn't care, yelled at me and hid in the back room. The two other employees were very nice and were completely on my side. They mentioned he had accepted returns in the past and didn't understand why not this time. I wonder if it's because we paid cash, but that's simply speculation. I vowed to make sure people knew about this experience and low and behold, when I checked out yelp reviews, there is only 1 and it's equally as terrible.
. . .
Best advice, stay away. No amount of savings is worth it. Someone should really offer those other dudes a job too, because they were really nice and no one deserves to work for someone like Jimmy P.
