This is not the same Checkers team that existed a few years ago. When I moved here, the checkers were the equivalent of an AA team but in recent years the Checkers have moved up to the AHL which is the equivalent of an AAA league. It's a step down from the NHL. The Checkers are now affiliate with the Carolina Hurricanes just up the road in Raleigh. The Checkers team actually moved from Albany, NY but was rebranded the Checkers.
Going to a checkers game is still a great value. Games are played at Time Warner Cable arena in uptown. Turnouts for weeknight games aren't as popular as weekends but that's to be expected. But the team and the announcers always keep the fans entertained no matter what the turnout is.
So get a group of people (friends, family, sports teams, etc) together come uptown for a game or two. It will be worth a few dollars for the tickets. Just watch out for concessions which are always expensive.
