  • First off, the don'ts: Don't bother going to this joint on the nights they do they oyster/crawfish specials (I think it's Wednesday and Thursday), it's packed far past the point of unpleasantness. It's just no fun, it ruins the experience, period. I mean, you know, unless you love oysters more than butterflies and rainbows and sex, in which case, knock yourself out I guess. I'd rather drive to the nearest ocean, pluck oysters out of it myself, take them home, spend a month learning how to prepare them properly and then make and serve them to myself than go to this stupid place when it's packed. Also, don't order the gumbo. It was awful. That's really all I have bad to say about the food I have had at Pappadeaux. Everything else has been just wonderful. I had the whitefish dinner with lemon butter and capers, my wife had the shrimp and lobster platter (I can't remember their fancy Cajun names). We shared the appetizer plate that had calamari and alligator tail meat, among other things - all of it was truly stupidly delicious. Their calamari preparation (and sauce) is the best I've had in my life, and that's saying something. So why the three stars, you might be asking, instead of four? Well frankly, it's just too expensive. It's obvious they've got hella overhead, the place is truly beautifully decorated, but you know what? I don't like paying for overhead, and there, I said it. I like paying for air conditioning and good food. I don't care if you've got one of every species of edible fish mounted to your beautifully laquered ornate wood trim or not, I really don't. If there are two of you and you are having a couple of drinks, it's difficult to walk out of this place for less than a benjamin and I frankly just think that's too much. We're not being served gold leafed fois gras and caviar here. This is especially so considering the portion sizes, which are not as criminal as Fish Market used to be, but are still not exactly a feast. In addition, the waitstaff is sub-par. I've said it before and I'll say it again, when I'm laying down this kind of jack, I don't expect to have to flag my waiter down like it's the last lap at Nascar. All that having been said, if you're craving good seafood and have the money and patience and can get a seat without waiting for an hour, Pappadeax is about as good as it gets in Phoenix.
