The King Eddy is one of those throwbacks to the good old days, when Britannia ruled the waves, the sun never set on the British Empire, and syphillis was killing snuff-sniffing dandies by the dozens.
The lobby is done up in the grand manner with China vases, plush armchairs and various other bric a brac, balustrades and columns on the mezzanine level above, and a big portrait of King Edward smug in his finery. The Consort Bar looks posh, but I did not partake - if I was here with a girl it would be a different story. Huge magnums of champagne were on display and it seemed to be the place for a quiet tete-e-tete.
Our room was away from the elevator in what appeared to be a newer section of the building. It was big, clean, and the windows looked out on King Street below - we were hardly in there.
The location is great. Jonge Street is right around the corner and the subway is only a few yards from the door. Most importantly the Hockey Hall of Fame is nearby. The staff was friendly and helpful. It definitely fits the image of a grand hotel that has not yet seen its prime - plus the price wasn't bad.
