  • I had been looking to purchase an ipod dock and was ready to spend roughly 5 hundred dollars therefore I went to the nearest Best Buy on a week night since I avoid these places on weekends. As I was trying to decide what products appealed to my liking I must have spent about 10 minutes trying to track anyone to help me with their knowledge on the electronics that they carry. For a couple of minutes I was thinking all the employees where being held hostage in the back room since there was not even a fly in sight! I was finally able to wave down a 16-17 year old boy who happened to be walking by with his head slumped down to the ground (he had the spirit of a sloth). I asked him if he could get someone to help me (as I could right away tell he was going to be completely useless) but he assured me that he could. I took a deep breath and decided to give him a chance, after all you shouldn't judge a book by its cover (but my female instinct told me otherwise). I tried to narrow it down to him as much as possible by telling him that I wanted something like a Bose but with better base. He stared into space to the point where you could hear the air running between his ears. his eyes then looked at the middle shelf as if trying to find a signed that pointed to the object I was describing. I could swear he did the good old "...and you are not it" game in his head. He then pointed to a 120dollar dock, I waited for him to tell me the specifics but again he let the opportunity to turn on the charm pass by. I had to say "tell me about this product" so he pulled the specs card which I could have easily have read it my self but had not done so because these cards speak a language that means nothing to me which is why I prefer to talk to a human in the first place. I tried to make it even simpler for this poor creature and said "let's test it out, I want to hear it and if I like it I'll buy it", and again he let the ball drop by saying "we don't have any ipods to test it, do you have your ipod with you?". Of-course I don't have my ipod with me, I'm from generation X, we take our ipods to the gym or when we are commuting but don't actually have it glued to our heads like generation Y!!! I said to him "don't you sell Ipods here? I'm sure you must have one around that we can use to test out this product." Nope, his brain did not lit up, but instead I was the one scrambling looking for an ipod in this "electronics" place, until I finally found one, a very small one that was connected close by the dock station! We connected it and what I heard was quite disappointing so I asked for the best dock ! He was tired and let out a sigh and pointed to another isle and said "there is the Dr. Dre dock around the corner", "lets take the ipod there" I suggested but he didn't want to be bother by then (must have been past his nap time as he was getting cranky). I too was getting quite fed up with this way below mediocre customer service I have received in a long time. I looked at him and asked him to get his manager...long stare then he walked away. Five minutes later, Mike the manager, came to my side. Now we are talking (I thought). A competent adult! Mike is about 27-35 years old and with much more social skills than the high school kid who obviously doesn't give two hoots about selling electronics and has absolutely no pride in his work, the only thing he cares about is collecting a check for the summer. Mike, was the total opposite, confident and social. Show me the best dock station you have! He also pointed to this Dr. Dre one, but when I asked if I could hear it, he said there were not ipods in the store to test, and that the staff did not lend theirs out. I was shocked at the reply I got from this adult since I was quite confident he had the ability to think outside the box. I asked him "you are going to let a 5hundred dollar sale go by because no one has an ipod to test out this product? Since when does the customer have to bring their own supplies to test out products??" Holy f*&k!! What can I say, some people are meant to be followers and some are meant to be leaders but not in Best Buy. Today I'm a happy owner of a beautiful dock station I purchased at the Apple Store where everyone that works there is properly trained in customer service and no question is too big and no task is too big.
