  • I always wanted to try kayaking but I never got the chance. We have been talking about trying to Kayak on the river right outside of PNC Park for a while now so we finally tried it out this past weekend. Not knowing what to expect we had a lot of fun and we will be kayaking again very soon We walked down the steps at the ballpark and saw the signs pointing for Kayaking. Their signs actually point you to their inside office that we went to first next to the river. You had to sign a waiver and they either hold a credit card or your driver license for collateral while you kayak. We wanted to ride in a tandem kayak but they said it would be a half an hour wait for those. Since we were in a time crunch for dinner we just decided to take solo kayaks out. After the initial check in they have you walk over to pick up your life preservers. They two guys there were nice. They helped us get into our life jackets and went over the rules for kayaking on the river. That took a few minutes but after that we were ready to go. I did want to ride the tandem Kayak with my wife since this was the first time that we had ever done this but it might have worked out better this way. You sit in the Kayak and there is a good amount of space to put a bag, purse, water, etc in the Kayak. They pushed us into the river and we were off! They said we could go where ever we wanted in the river. We just needed to stay on the sides of the river and if we wanted to cross the river we should go fast and straight across to stay safe. We Kayaked up the Allegheny river at first. That is against the current so it is a little hard but not too hard to kayak. 10 minutes of that I wanted to turn around and head towards the stadiums so we could get some pictures. There wasn't anything too exciting to see going up the Allegheny. Riding with the current was a lot more fun and easier. Once my wife and I got used to our solo Kayaks we were able to kayak pretty well side by side. I still wished we were together but looking at other tandem couples getting the solo ones might have been better. In the tandem kayaks it looks like you can get into each others way very easily and splash your partner a lot. Guys you know this might be a problem getting your girl wet or hitting her with the oar accidentally! We will still try the tandem Kayak next time but like I said it might have been for the best for us at first! So we went down the river past PNC Park. I was able to get a lot of good pics of my wife in the Kayak. We didn't have much time to just chill out on the river so that's something I will want to do next time. We went down to Heinz Field and then traveled across the river to the Point. That was a lot of fun and exciting being in the middle the Allegheny where it meets the other two rivers. Going across the river was when my wife started having trouble with her Kayak. The current was harder and it pushed you a lot in your kayak. It took a lot of work to get a cross and head back upstream. My wife is very strong and fit so don't think that she just couldn't handle it. She was just having some trouble with the strong current and it would have been better if I was able to help her out. We got back to where we started and then we were finished. It took us an hour and we would have stayed longer if we didn't have to be somewhere. I thought the service was really good and we had a lot of fun kayaking. If you haven't done this before in our beautiful city don't hesitate. It is safe, fun, and you wont be disappointed!
