  • Our pool pump motor, an old single-speed A.O. Smith Century 2HP 10.5A 230v model with an FR 56 frame, running at 3450 RPM, was making an awful racket. The neighbors were complaining about the noise -- That's how bad it was. It still pumped water, but was very noisy and getting noiser as time went on. It had gotten to the point where the noise was a serious problem. I filed a claim online with my home warranty company (Old Republic). I received a call from Southwest Pools right away. I did have problems getting them to come when I needed them -- I was told drivers do their scheduling in the morning and they would come when it was convenient for them, not for me. Worked out okay though. Southwest came out a day or two later to look at it. The serviceperson looked at it and determined the bearings were worn. I discovered later, after it was pulled, that part of the casing had rusted away too. Rather than replace it that day, he said he had to write a report in order to get approval from Old Republic to pay for it. A few days later Southwest called me to let me know the repair had been approved by Old Republic. I really appreciate that the Southwest serviceperson wrote the report up correctly so that the repair was covered by Old Republic. The serviceperson, Rutilio, came out the day after I was told the repair was approved. Same scheduling problem, but no big deal. It worked out okay again. On this second visit, during which he replaced the pump motor, it took him an hour or two from arrival to departure. He was quickly out and done: The way it ought to be. He replaced the A.O. Smith pump motor with an Emerson. Not sure if it was new, used, or rebuilt, but it works fine so far. It looks shiny and clean, so even if it's used it looks pretty good. I don't care as long as it works and has the right specificatons. The Emerson he replaced the A.O. Smith with had the same specs for horsepower, RPM, etc., so, unlike some reviewers claim happened to them, Southwest did NOT downgrade the part upon replacement. Doesn't matter to me if it's an A.O. Smith or Emerson, since they are about equivalent in price if they have the same specs. The serviceperson did leave the cover loose on the heater, but I presume this means he did a quick check of the heater before he left. I appreciate that he did that. Because the front cover was loose, I checked it after he left. It started right up and ran fine as far as I could tell. The delay of about 5-7 days from when they first called me until the repair was done was not a problem; that's because the old pump was still running even though it was noisy. Because the pool was not damaged by the delay and there was no reason to think it would have been, it was not a problem. If I'd had a pump that wasn't working at all, or an issue that needed to be addressed immediately in order to avoid further damage to the pool or pool system, I would have been upset by the delay. However, in my situation it was not a problem. I would be delighted if Old Republic sent Southwest Pool and Spa Repair next time I have a pool repair issue. I had no problems with them other than a little scheduling difficulty. They did a great job. If this is a trend, then their previous issues are behind them now. Maybe I just got lucky, but Southwest Pool did a fine job in my case!
