I just moved to Boston from Phoenix and am searching for a new salon. Reading Yelp reviews inspired me to sign up and review Mood Swings.
I absolutely loved Mood Swings when I lived in Phoenix. The first time I called to make an appointment, I specifically requested a stylist who had both a lot of experience and enough creativity to go beyond cookie-cutter haircuts. The person on the phone told me they had just the right person for me.
I got an appointment with Chere, who turned out to be the first stylist to actually knew what to do with my hair - woohoo! I have baby fine hair and what I believe is a somewhat unusual face shape, so I hadn't had any real luck prior to meeting Chere. She seems to have a few creative tricks up her sleeve, and she's not afraid to improvise a bit to make a style work. She has also highlighted my hair with great results. The highlights always looked natural and seemed to be placed just right.
As if all of that weren't enough, Chere was also very friendly and kept it real - no phonisness at all. I'm very sad that I moved 3000 miles away and have to find a new stylist.
The salon itself is pretty cool. The staff was always very friendly and the atmosphere artsy and breezy - it's a loft space with plenty of natural light and local art hanging on the walls. I was also surprised by how affordable the salon's service were, but then again, I was used to Chicago prices. If I had to complain about something, I'd just say that the waiting area is a little awkward and uncomfortable.
As someone else here has already mentioned, the scalp, arm and hand massage is a great bonus - talk about feeling pampered!!
