| - I had an incredible day on Sunday at OdySea Aquarium! I was one of the first to do the Penguin Encounter. Cost is about 49.95 and takes about 45 minutes to have a very memorable experience. Personnel were incredible.
We were met by Hutch who walked us through the whole program. An experienced and knowledgeable resource for any question you can imagine about our little tuxedo'd friends, Hutch was patient, thorough, and couldn't have been a better liaison for the experience.
I learned so much about them. Part of the experience is to go into a classroom to learn more about the birds, how to act or respond and how we will be interacting with the penguins.
They are appropriately very protective of the birds while allowing us an experience to feel close to them. We sat in a circle in their special handling room and allowed the birds to come to us with their natural curiousity after watching them feed. Which is really interesting to watch them get a whole herring in one gulp.
Then we got to share toys and intrigue the birds or whatever is natural. Keep your hands in lap or close to your body, as aggressive movements can scare the birds. They are naturally curious and will get close to you anyway--and as a priviledged guest, I felt honored that we were allowed to share the interactive experience.
This session is great for well-behaved children who can listen, follow, and understand the protocol to senior age. It's best if you can sit on the ground, but if you can't there is a rock chair there to sit on. If so, you won't be at bird level, but you'll still have a great view and my friend sat there and had just as great an experience.
The freckles on their chest is their thumbprint, no two penguin markings are alike. Yankee, Tux, Jazzy and 3 other penguins there were super memorable and adorable to watch and experience. Can't say enough.
At the end you get a souvenir large photo of you petting a penguin with Hutch--and a large photo of the birds taken that day. You get this in a nice souvenir photo folder. When I was at Sea World they would try to sell these to you for $30 or so, that was a real bonus.
You can also buy for $59.95 a flash drive with all the photos of your penquin encounter. Which I did and I love having all the photos of it.
All in all, it's a great experience.
Some confusion is the Odysea Aquarium does not have dolphins. This is a separate admission in the same complex.
Some other reviews are negative here. I enjoyed the Aquarium, the exhibits, and the whole experience very much and I hope people support our Scottsdale attractions and remember that all businesses evolve and grow and we allow them to do that with our support.
I look forward to going back to do the Sea Trek underwater.
