Down town to see KODO! These Japanese drummers and whack-masters put the CUSS in percussion (in a good way). Saw them a couple years ago in Des Moines performing a whole different other set and am still moved by the performance. The tempo and intensity shifts from the raw intensity of the big drums to smooth staccato and drum corpsey rhythms to transcendent xylophonics and cymbalism with some handwork during an amusing little pantomime.
Best seats are kinda close - about a dozen or so rows back - and the more centered the better. Sit too close and you can't see the whole stage, too far back the left/right separation is muddied, so too when moving off center.
By far the biggest disappointment of the evening was the audience. During the intermission at least one group was crudely mocking the performers in pidgin while waxing moronic about the wonders of prime time television and basketball. Fortunately the drumming drowned out the hollow noise of mouth breathing after the house lights went down again.
