| - I learned of The LASIK Vision Institute through a Groupon they were offering for custom LASIK. Admittedly, I was hesitant due to the cost. After reading the various Yelp reviews and learning that a good friend had LASIK done under the same Groupon, I decided to give it a try.
TLDR; The experience was exactly as described in other Yelp reviews. Customer service was terrible and similar to buying a used car - don't give in to their high-pressure sales tactics. The surgeon and results, however, are amazing!
Prior to my appointment, I asked if I needed to do anything and was told I didn't have to. Within 5 minutes of my appointment, however, I was told I shouldn't have worn my contacts; the tech seemed annoyed at the fact that I had them in. I was then taking into the office of one of the counselors, who told me that everything was included with my Groupon, including lifetime corrections, if needed. A few tests later, I was brought into the office of a different counselor, Jordan, who went on to ask me how I would be paying for the additional $1,400. Obviously very surprised by this, considering I was previously told everything was included, I had to ask what the $1,400 was even for - it included lifetime corrections and tear duct plugs to help with dry eyes. I immediately declined both, but was given a few minute speech as to why I should get them - it was a very hard, uncomfortable sale. I continued to decline, at which time Jordan offered to give it to me for half off. Just goes to show how overpriced all their add-ons are if they're willing to drop the price by 50% right away. It's unfair to the consumer to originally make it sound like they don't have a choice about the additional price. Basically: "Okay, you have a Groupon for LASIK, your total will be $1,400 extra"...wait, what?!?
When I arrived for my surgery, I was taken into another office by Jordan, once again, who acted as though we had never met, even though it was only a week later and he knew that it wasn't my first time in the office. He immediately began to sell me on the lifetime plan and ducts again. To show, again, how overpriced some components are, I was finally given the offer to do the plugs and 1 year warranty for just $100, which I took. His manager "authorized him to do that deal, just for that day". Sort of ridiculous - they tried to charge me $400 for the plugs alone, and I got them plus a year of corrections for just $100. Come to find out, he had a separate contract ready to go for this deal, even though he was "given special permission to offer it". What a scam. I asked for a copy of this separate agreement twice, but Jordan never gave it to me. I ended up having to ask the front desk for it later on.
This is not to say that the entire staff is unfriendly. It's hit or miss. Half of them are very nice and helpful while the other are sour and obviously don't want to be there.
Waiting for the procedure took some time and I did feel like I was in a LASIK factory, but I wasn't bothered by this too much. The surgeon only does the procedures once a week, so they obviously do what they can to make the process most efficient to get a lot of folks through.
The surgery was a bit uncomfortable for me, personally, but it was quick, the surgeon was great, and the results are incredible - vision went from 20/400 to 20/20. All in all, I'm happy I went through the process, but wish the customer service side was more pleasant.
