  • This Valumart is in the basement of the Manulife Centre, and it has several things going for it: 1) It is on two subway lines (Bay St and Bloor St), and you can get there completely underground from both, which is an excellent benefit in the cold winter months when you want to hibernate, but you want to eat too. 2) It has President's Choice products, and my fav Blue Line (providing healthful, lower fat alternatives), a decent deli selection, and an ok fresh meat/fish selection. The frozen food selection (especially fish) is excellent. 3) The produce is slightly variable, but in general it is good with a really good selection, including organic stuff. 4) They have President's Choice hot chocolate, which is needed in the cold, dark winter months. 5) I think the bakery is ok, although I admit it: I have tried nothing from it, so maybe fellow yelpers want to comment? 6) It is close to an LCBO and a Rexall's, so you can get almost everything you need in one place, aaaaandd if you need recipes: well Indigo books is right there too! The not so good: 1) This place is seriously schizophrenic - the layout is awkward, and the organization is nonexistent! It took me forever to find wheatgerm one day, and that was *after* asking for help (although staff are friendly, and definitely try). When the staff are getting lost, there is a problem. 2) With the recession, it is starting to get more crowded. It used to be almost empty in the evenings and on Sundays. I shouldn't complain, because the produce appears to be proportionately fresher, so it might be a good thing. 3) The pharmacy stuff is lacking (ie shampoos, personal hygiene products etc), but there is a Rexall's across the way. Prices kick Wholefoods in the butt, and many things (ie Blueline stuff, Organics stuff, PC stuff) are of equal quality. The hours are good too, open past 7 pm most nights, and open Sundays as well. The only thing better would be a Superstore with Joe Fresh stuff, in the same location.
