  • My family took my Niece and Nephew up the the 2016 Day Out With Thomas event at CVSR which took place at the Boston Mills location on Riverview Road. It was fairly easy to find located close to the Turnpike and was a nice ride back through the hilly and winding roads. The event was very nicely run with ample parking and volunteers directing traffic. The gravel parking lots had some rather large chunks which I think would be hard to navigate for some older folks or for anyone in a wheelchair/motorized chair. Luckily this didn't hamper us. I felt the event was very organized. There were lots of volunteers directing people, taking tickets and handing out maps so there was never a time when we had to wait long. There was a souvenir tent which had grossly overpriced Thomas items but that was to be expected. The kids each got a shirt and a balloon on the way out. There was an activity tent with temporary tattoos, videos and play areas. Another had a model railroad set up. A couple of bounce houses were available and an entertainment tent with a DJ and a children's magic show each hour. A tent for first aid and also a separate tent for nursing and changing were also available. There were some concession stands but figuring they were high priced we opted to bring bottled water and snacks for the kids. You just couldn't take food on the trains. A number of porta-potties were available and fairly well kept I must add so that wasn't an issue either. Across the street was were you boarded the train. Volunteers would stop traffic for pedestrians to cross and you lined up according to which car you were on. The process was again very well organized. The train cars were older but in decent shape and fairly clean for their age. Trains do get dirty, it just happens. Each car was decorated with a Thomas the Tank Engine theme and there was Thomas music playing. I will say the music was rather loud and could have been turned down quite a bit. While Thomas was at the back of the train, another engine pulled then pushed the cars. You went one direction for 15 minutes and the the other direction for 15 minutes for a 30 minute ride. A bit short for my taste but probably the perfect time for young children. There was a conductor who checked tickets and gave out Jr. Train Engineer certificates to the kids with their name on them. Our conductor in car 5 was very nice and friendly with the kids and played his part well. When you exit the train you walk along the gravel towards Thomas where a line forms for pictures. The workers will take groups photos which are then sold to you in various forms however, you may also take your own pictures. We did buy a $12 magnet photo but did took enough of our own pictures to be fine without spending more money. You also had an opportunity to get a picture with Sir Topham Hatt after leaving the train. Again, pay for photos or take your own. Your choice. You can spend as much time as you want doing activities after your train ride so make sure you check it all out. So this was a great event for kids! You get a lot for a $16 ticket. Kids 2 and under are free as long as the sit on an adults lap. I have very little negative to say. This has definitely got me interested in other events like Rails&Ales, the Murder Mysteries and Haunted Train Ride. I picked up info on the way out and look forward to a return trip!
