| - I've stayed at several Starwood properties in the greater Phoenix area (Westin Kierland Villas, W Scottsdale, Four Points Tempe) and the overall experience at the Phoenician tops them all. The service was top notch, breakfasts on site were great, and we had a blast at the pools. The overall décor seemed a bit dated (or at least not my stle), but that didn't distract from the overall experience.
LOCATION:
Located less than 10 minutes from Old Town Scottsdale and Scottsdale Fashion Square (shopping, eating, and drinking), the Phoenician is a great home base for a trip to the desert. If you're in town for Spring Training, the Phoenician offers free shuttle service to the Giants games with Salt River Fields (D'Backs and Rockies) less than 20 minutes away and a host of other teams within a reasonable drive.
ROOM:
We stayed in Casita "A" in Room 7103 for three nights. We were on the ground floor and our sliding glass doors opened up onto a patio overlooking the large lawn and the Necklace Lake. We had a king bed and a rollaway bed for aC. The bathroom was spacious with a separate shower and tub. There was a small nook in the hall area with a coffee maker, waters, etc. Even with the addition of the rollaway bed, there was plenty of space for two adults and child to move around, hang out, and not feel cramped.
It was a great setup for a family as aC could walk right out to play on the lawn and we were a very short walk from the various pools. If you have kids, I'd opt for a ground floor Casita room rather than an upstairs unit. Parking was available right outside the Casita, which made getting around a breeze. I didn't feel like we missed out on anything by not being in the main building.
RESORT:
First of all, the service from the front desk to the pool to the restaurant was fantastic every step of the way. Everyone was friendly, attentive, and made us feel welcome. This is the kind of service every hotel should have.
We spent a lot of time at the gorgeous pools and on the waterslide, and aC joined the other kids on the property running back and forth trying not to fall off the floating mats (which I like to think of as "Wipeout Jr."). The Surge splash area hadn't yet opened, but we could tell that it would've been a great hangout for little kids. The only possible thing that was missing was a lazy river (like at the Westin Kierland) but there was still plenty to do at the pools here. Finding chairs to lounge in was not an issue.
While we never dropped aC off the Funician Kids Club, we did take her to Hoppy Hour where she was able to pick up a stuffed animal bunny, which is a great souvenir and reminder of our time at the Phoenician.
SPG PLATINUM:
This was my 50th stay (not nights but stays) at a Starwood property, and we were welcomed to our room by a cheese plate, bottles of Voss water, a Phoenician beach/pool bag, pool toys, and goggles. Given that this was a family trip, they couldn't have chosen a better way to greet us and aC was very excited about all the "presents."
We didn't have to pay a resort fee or for anything other than the drinks we ordered at the pool. We had the full run of the breakfast buffet (pastries, fruit, meats, smoothies, omelet bar, etc.) every morning and we were never once charged (contrast with some Starwoods where you only get a continental breakfast).
