| - The Bay is a solid company overall, if they weren't they wouldn't still be operating since first opening their doors in 1670. They are Canada's largest department store and specialize in fashion, beauty, home and accessories from some of the best brands and designers available.
With over 90 locations in Canada, some are definitely better than others. In my experience, all the The Hudson Bay stores I've visited are good but not all are great. The Chinook Centre location is one of the better locations because it's big, well organized and they carry a lot of new inventory from top brands and designers. Some stores get significantly less than others for brands and stock, but this location isn't missing much.
Their beauty section is very prominent and one of their highlight sections, so it's no surprise that this is their feature entrance in the actual
mall. Men and women's fashion are great as well, very large and tons to choose from from a wide array of brands. Shoes, handbags, accessories and kids are pretty good as well, but not as big a highlight as the formerly mentioned. Jewelry is a bit of a miss here for me, so-so selection and you're usually better off at a specialty store. Their home selection is pretty good as well, but their sister store "Home Outfitters" is an even better bet for this in most cases. Worthwhile mentions: luggage section is good, and they also have an exclusive Bay Company Collection section and Olympic Team Selection which are cool, especially for souvenirs/visitors.
I have a couple knocks against The Bay, first off, the service. Despite carrying such a great inventory they lack a strong and knowledgable staff to stand behind it. This is most obvious in the fashion section. For example their men's section is great, but there's rarely people on the floor available to help and when you do find someone they're ill-equipped to adequately assist you. Sadly I'd get much better service at Tip Top and be more inclined to buy there based on that despite their poorer selection. That's the general theme for fashion shopping at The Bay. Beauty professionals are much better, home department are hit and miss, and jewelry are okay but as previously mentioned the selection is meh. My second knock is the prices, they're high! How you get around this is sale items and "Bay Days", you can do really well at The Bay with careful shopping but for everyday purchases you're gonna leave with a much lighter wallet.
Lastly their wedding registry services are decent; you get 10% off which extends into a 1-year completion program. Luggage and mattresses get up to 55% off in the program IIRC.
The Hudson Bay Co. is a great store overall, where it falls short is on service and on prices. But if you're a savvy shopper who knows what to look for you can do well here!
