The Spotted Dick is one of those restaurants that I won't go to of my own free will. Because of its proximity to our office, it ends up being the restaurant of choice for going-away lunches.
I've been there twice within the last six months. People need to stop leaving our department or at the very least, request a better place to eat as a last wish.
I have been generally impressed by their service. We book a group of 15-20 people and get waited on by 1-2 waitstaff, who are pretty pleasant and efficient. Food orders come quickly and they aren't hesitant to do separate bills.
The food, however, is less impressive. It's just typical pub fare but not outstanding. The fish and chips ($10.50) is decent. I tried a lunch special of Philly Cheese Steak sandwich ($9.50). It came with a choice of appetizers ranging from soup, spring roll or grilled calamari salad. I opted to for the salad which consisted of overly dressed greens topped with a few small pieces of cold calamari. The sandwich was edible but left me wanting the Great Steak and Potato Company's version.
I think if I have to eat there again, I'm just going to with a liquid lunch and order pints. Although my coworker did order a Rickard's White and said it tasted flat. Alright, whiskey for lunch it is.
