  • Yep. Still the best fish fry in Madison. Fried cod is amazing: thick, meaty pieces of cod in a beer batter, fried to crispy perfection. They have a kids menu that provides similar items to the rest of the company's other restaurants (the owners of Avenue Bar also own Monty's Blue Plate, Market Street Diner, etc.), and even though we didn't order from there this past visit, we have in the past and the kids liked their meals. It's always great fun to look around and take in all the sights and sounds. Sure, it's a little dark, the walls are filled with sports memorabilia and tchotchkes, and the crowd skews toward the older side (I remember having an early dinner and the waiter asking one group if they wanted their usual of liver and onions--true story!), but this is Wisconsin supper club through-and-through. We've been missing Wisconsin fish frys since moving to Kansas, and Avenue Bar was our second stop in town (first being the Old Fashioned) and didn't disappoint. I can't recommend much beyond the fish fry, but boy, that fried fish cod was worth the trip.
