It's now 2015 and Hohokam Park has been taken over by my Oakland A's during Spring Training.
When I first heard about this I wasn't too thrilled. I really enjoyed Phoenix Muni, primarily because of its stellar location being down the street from the airport and also downtown Tempe, to the large parking lot and cool bridge that takes you into the park. However after visiting Mesa this season, I am OK with the move.
I had been to Hohokam before for a few Cubs games and it was always packed because the Cubs are so popular. With the A's moving in they have removed the ugly mobile bleachers down the lines and replaced them with shaded picnic areas with concessions. They have also put in a brand new digital TV scoreboard in LF that is one of the best in the Cactus League.
New food additions are Ike's sandwiches in the course (those of us in the Bay Area are familiar with these guys) and a gourmet pretzel truck in the RF corner that sells mustache shaped pretzels that you can add toppings to. I had a salted caramel one and it was pretty good.
In my opinion the best thing this place offers over Phoenix Muni is the berm. The berm here is huge and Muni doesn't have one. Also tickets for the berm are typically the cheapest price rate and are treated like SRO. So this will save you money and you can sneak into some seats later assuming it's not a packed game.
For parking I wouldn't recommend parking the actual lot. It's only $5 but it can be a pain getting out. You can find free street parking starting a block away or pay $3 to park in the front yard of some of the families that live across the street from the stadium.
Being an A's fan I will continue to visit this place annually regardless, but I was glad to see first hand this year that it's a good experience and that the move here is a good thing for us Oakland fans.
