| - Today I went to the range by myself as a first timer but I was really hesitant after reading some of the negative reviews. I figured I can't knock it until I've tried it so I went on a Saturday afternoon. I recently purchased my first handgun, an XDM .40 and I've only shot 50 rounds on public land but I wanted to practice more and this range was the closest to my house. I'm not a huge fan of indoor ranges because I've heard horror stories and I wanted to go somewhere that was strict with their safety regulations plus who doesn't love the great outdoors?
From what I've read from other negative reviews was that the range officers go off on people for not being safe (pointing down range, rail open during cease-fire or when not shooting the gun) and I told myself, that if I couldn't follow these strict safety regulations then maybe I shouldn't be shooting a gun, to begin with.
I was slightly nervous when walking up to the main office tried to keep it cool. The window opened and a very friendly range officer by the name of Derrick greeted me. I told him it was my first time at the range. He told me to fill out the waiver and sign the rules sheet. After that, he instructed me to watch a short safety video for the range. I thought that was pretty cool because I've been to other ranges in California and I've never been shown a safety video before. After it was over, Derrick asked me if I had any questions and then proceeded to answer all of my questions in a nice manner.
After that, he told me that I'm now free to grab my equipment and head to the main range where they allow both rifle and hand gun shooters to shoot at. I grabbed my bag and headed to the range to find him out on the range. He answered a few questions I had about where to stand and where I can place my targets. While I was waiting, another person with a custom AR took the bay to my left. He was super nice and everyone at the range was super nice, courteous and all safe.
The only time I saw someone breaking a rule was a new shooter to the range. It was during a ceasefire and he forgot to take his magazine out of the rifle and open the chamber. An older range officer walked up to him and was very nice about letting him know that he forgot to take out his magazine and open the chamber of his rifle. Because of all the negative reviews, I was ready for this range officer to go off on him but it didn't happen. To be honest, not one range officer went off on anyone on that range while I was there.
The range had some nice perks. They offer cold free water, free target boards and a ton of range officers to answer any questions or to watch for safety regulations.
I will be back to this range, no doubt about it. I had a very very positive experience and as a first timer at this range with a brand new pistol I thought for sure I would get yelled at for some dumb reason or another but honestly it's really not that hard to keep your gun aimed down range, release the magazine and open the rail when you're not shooting. Also, there are different color lines making it easy to know where to stand and when to stand. When I left I thanked Derick for the positive experiance.
As the Terminator once said... I'll be back! and I definitely will.
Thanks again Derrick for being super courteous to me today. I appreciate it!
