  • I have a LOVE / HATE relationship with CMS. Having been in and around CMS for many, many years, I feel like I have seen and done quite a bit. Even as far as being injured during a race, as a spectator, and having to deal with the track's insurance claims representative. What a mess. As always - you're the one in the wrong. Poor, poor system in place to deal with serious spectator issues. Most of the volunteer ushers could care less about what's going on. We were in a condo when there was a race rain out and contacted the ticket office the next day if we could switch our VIP tickets over to Grandstand admission since the condo we were in would not be reopening. I was told yes, absolutely. I immediately headed for the ticket office when I refused to be transferred over to Grandstand tickets. Wow, really CMS!? Like I said, I have been all over the map at CMS attending several different races and functions over the years. Overall experiences: Some good. Some bad. They do a great job partnering with American Red Cross for the "Laps for Life" September 11 memorial blood drive, allowing race fans to drive their cars on the track and receive race tickets in exchange for a blood donation. The Summer Shootout is a fun time to watch some racing on the bullring quarter mile on the front stretch watching young up-and-comers as well as some washed up 'ol veteran racers. Those events are very fan friendly and they try to involve the young race fans all the time. They offer several options to enjoy race day, all based on your budget. You can go in to the garage area, sit in The Speedway Club, or several suite areas. The general seating areas are also based on your budget as well. The food options are diverse and typically affordable, compared to a NFL stadium - but can still be pricey! The good thing about NASCAR-sanctioned facilities is you can pack a cooler within track size limits to bring in your own beverages as well as any other snack or food items you desire to consume. A lot of first time fans don't know this! I love seeing their reaction when you teach them that little nugget about motorsports venues! As far as race day parking, track property parking is typically free. Anything outside of the track property could incur a small parking fee. This area is known for a high number of DUI charges. YOU SHOULDN'T BE DRINKING AND DRIVING ANYWAY! SHAME ON YOU. I was nabbed and pulled out to perform the DUI circus tricks while trying to leave the All-Star Race. Passing, of course, because I was fine. (I didn't have my headlights on - only my truck fog lights as were doing less than 3mph in the parking lot not going anywhere... that was a sign to them I was drunk) Anywho.... Away from the racing schedule you can do a NASCAR ride-a-long or driving experience! Or you can buy a CMS tour and check out the entire facility.
