It is impossible to be unhappy in Phipps Conservatory. Go uplift your spirits. :D
Phipps Conservatory is the largest Victorian glass greenhouse in the United States. Mr. Phipps was a steel magnate who hung out the with Carnegies and the Fricks back when the sky in Pittsburgh was black with smoke at noon. Victorians considered learning about plants and flowers a noble pursuit. Workers were encouraged to go visit the gardens on Sundays to see the exotic flora and fauna.
Years later and a huge major renovation completed, Phipps is more people friendly than ever and packed full of interesting plants. Check out the website for various kids activities. There is always a Christmas flower show, a fall flower show and a spring flower show. Spring was always my favorite because it was a riot of color when everything outside was still gray. If I recall correctly, February is the Orchid show in the very large Orchid Room.
When I was a kid it was just a case of orchids but now it has grown to a huge room with a serpentine path around an indoor long narrow pond complete with goldfish. You'd think you were walking around in Brazil.
Family friendly or a good place to take a date and walk and talk.
