Was on this trial 2 weeks ago in Sep 2017 when visiting Vegas and it was a very nice and comfortable day in 70 ish degree. Initially i wanted to go to the GoldStrike Hotspring trail with the robe climb, but found out on yelp that it is not open until October!! I missed the Goldstrike trial as So I found this one as an alternative. It is not too far from the strip and I think it was about 35-40 drive from the strip area. That day, the Tank was very dry and that is a sign that it has not been raining for a while. Meaning it should be safe to do some climbing without worry too much the rock may fall loosely.
This trail head parking lot is closed, but the trial is still open. Me and my hubby got confused when we get there like 9am in the morning due to the entrance to the parking lot is closed with construction renewing the parking area with bathroom. I walked into the construction site and asked the people there if the trial is closed. They said the trial is open and just go behind the fence. We were told not to park next to the road leading to the parking lot, but park next to the main road. So we moved our car and there were many car following us to park next to the main road afterward. Do not park on the road leading to the parking lot, it may block the construction vehicles passing and you may get a fine or get towed away.
It was a short hike about 2.3 mile one way in and out loop. We got some sandwich for lunch to eat at the end. We saw 2 wild rabbits with a cute white ball tail but they ran very fast that I couldn't take a picture of them.
The trial has a lot of rock scramble if you choose to go off trial. At the end you get reward with a good view of the strip. If you go to the left side at the end of the trial, there is a hidden narrow short climb up to the rock (see picture) which I find a lot of fun. But it felt a bit dangerous as if the rocks may fall off any any time. So use your judgement and check if there was any rain in the pass 2-3 day before climbing as recent rain may loosen rocks to fall. On our way way, we got a bit lost finding the trail back at an area where the path is not clear, but you will eventually find it after explore for a while.
Before I start this trial, I downloaded an app call Hiking Project (looks like it is done by REi) to test how a hiking satellite app would work. It offers free trail marking with offline access if you download the area map in advance. So that is what I did. The app definitely helped but some area the satellite showed that we are off the trial a bit while we are not. So I m still learning how to use this offline app as I got lost before hiking in the mountain and forest and it was not a pleasant experience at all. I test the app with airplane mode and it worked fine. My husband used the app AllTrails to mark our trial and it is also free and very good as well. As long we you have enough phone battery (bring external battery if needed).
I would come back to this trial when visiting Las Vegas again.
