| - EQ3 - Shame. On. You.
I had heard that EQ3 was basically an upscale version of IKEA, so going into the store for the first time my expectations were not unrealistically high, but I definitely expected far more for my money. I really liked the idea that customers had the opportunity to customize their purchases by selecting upholstery swatches, supporting legs, and color options on 'wooden' (I use that term lightly) furniture. But the warm fuzzy feeling ended there. My review is not based on a single item purchase, it is based on a large order I placed to furnish my new (at the time) home. I'm not even going to comment on the shipping, I am only going to comment on the quality of the items themselves. And include a quick blurb about the customer service at the end, oh you'll simply *love* it!
** ITEM 1: Full Set of Parsons Dining Room Chairs http://eq3.com/cat-eq3/process/locale/en_CA/currency/en_CA/page/30913-72.html
Cost Based on Customization: $500+
Do you know what a properly upholstered chair looks like? I do. I actually returned my chairs to the warehouse within minutes of having picked them up and taken them home because I thought they were unfinished. The seat portion of the chairs were properly upholstered, however, the backrests were all missing the much needed buffer between the foam and the slipcover. This is the layer that protects the slipcover from wear through every day use. For a chair, I would think this is quite important. Turns out, it wasn't a half finished job, just a half-ass quality job. In addition, I am now prepared with a screwdriver in hand after every dinner party as the chairs all seem to loosen and shift under normal use circumstances. No, nobody is dancing on them. That's what the table is for (not purchased at EQ3, thank God or somebody would have gone home with a broken neck by now).
** ITEM 2: Bed Frame and Headboard http://eq3.com/cat-eq3/process/locale/en_CA/currency/en_CA/page/30304-45.html
Cost Based on Size and Customization: $1200
The headboard simply rests within the bed frame . There is nothing to fasten the two pieces together which means that the headboard falls to rest against the wall. Do you see a problem with this? I sure do. Not only does my wall have a permanent discolored line across it (yay, I really look forward to repainting should I ever want to rearrange my furniture), but since the headboard has no means of support it will eventually also start to warp from the pressure.
**ITEM 3: Entertainment Storage Cabinet plus Storage Unit Inserts http://eq3.com/cat-eq3/process/locale/en_CA/currency/en_CA/page/3030-524.html
Cost Based on Customization: $1200+
I don't even know where to begin with this one. Jenga comes to mind.
**ITEM 4: Selema Storage Ottoman http://eq3.com/cat-eq3/process/locale/en_CA/currency/en_CA/page/30024-94.html
Cost Based on Customization: $800
Wow. Really, just wow. Since this is a "storage" ottoman, it is opened once in a blue moon. After opening it, literally, a handful of times the entire lid started to shift and fall off. The metal frame houses over a dozen screws. EQ3 assembled it with 6. Six. Needless to say, with the unsupported weight, the lid would shift ever so slightly stripping the wood around the screws and eventually making a big old mess.
**BONUS ROUND - CUSTOMER SERVICE! *ding, ding, ding*
I went in person to complain at the store. They gave me a telephone number to call. I called. And I called. And I called. And then I contacted the store again who put me back through to the number (you see where I am going with this, but that won't stop me from going on). And I did actually talk to someone who promised to resolve my issues. But I never heard from her again. So I emailed. And then I emailed again. And then I heard from someone who promised to resolve my issues. And six months later (after repairing items myself) I emailed one more time expressing my dissatisfaction and informing them that they had lost a customer. They didn't give a fak, which is exactly what I expected.
And now not only do you know to stay far, far away from EQ3 but you also know what the inside of my home looks like. I'd invite you over for coffee, but there's really nowhere safe to sit.
