  • Run before this happens to you. Thousands in lost rent, thousands in unauthorized and incomplete repairs, headaches trying to evict the horrible tenants Mike Huffman chose, thousands in other costs due to Mike's lies over a year and a half after we thought this mess was behind us we are now potentially facing an IRS audit as a result of his incompetence filing tax documents. Feb 2018 we received a mistaken 2017 IRS 1099 for the 2016 income we had already paid taxes on last year. Mikes accountant says he'll correct it sometime between April 17th to May 1st. Unacceptable. Our business dealings with Mike and his cohorts is a terrible nightmare that just won't end. The "glitch" IRS 1099 debacle apparently affected all of his clients. Our conversation chain is below. You can decide if this is the kind of problem you'd like to have from your property manager and how it should be taken care of. This is on top of everything else he is liable to put you through if your experience with him becomes anything like ours. On Feb 14, 2018, 3:52 PM After numerous attempts to contact Mike by phone Greg L wrote: Michael, We received NO income from you in 2017, yet you sent us a 1099. We need this corrected and your phone numbers no longer work. Call me. Greg L (number redacted) On February 14, 2018 at 3:54 PM From: "Mike H" To: Greg L Subject: Re: INACCURATE 2017 1099 Greg, There was a glitch with our accounting software and everyone received inaccurate 10-99s from our accounting department. The corrected versions will be going out very shortly if they havent already. Yours will of course have a 0 on it. On Feb 24, 2018, 12:54 AM Greg L wrote: Have not received the corrected 1099. what's the status? He apologizes for the delay, and I am personally sorry for that and the mixup! On Mar 7, 2018, 7:54 AM, Greg L wrote: Mike? What is the hold up? Can't file taxes without corrected 1099. On Mar 7, 2018, 10:21 AM, Mike H wrote: Hi Greg- I am so sorry. I was under the impression that my accountant had already sent the corrections and it appears they have not. I just forwarded your email and will call him now as well. We May be able to email you a copy of yours so we don't hold you up any longer. Mar 7 12:33PM Mike H wrote: Greg- Just wanted to let you know that I left a message as well as an email to my accountant. Since you received no income from us in 2017 and our system will not print a 10-99 with a 0 on it (I tried to go in myself and do it) I have to wait to hear back from Scott. I am pretty certain that he has aleady corrected this issue with the form that he turns into the IRS reporting that we did not pay you anything in 2017. You can try him as well if you like. His name is (name redacted) and he can be reached at (number redacted) Now that Mike dumped getting his accountant to fix the problem I called his office being told he was out or unavailable and that I would receive a call back. That call never came, but they finally gave me the accountants e-mail address. Tuesday, March 27, 2018 5:58 PM To: Scott (name redacted) Subject: misfiled 1099 Hi Scott, I received an inaccurate 1099 from your office filed on behalf of Mike Huffman at Michael Allen Realty showing that I had rental income in 2017 when I had not. I've been wanting to file my taxes without fear that I'll be audited as the result of an erroneous 1099. Has this misfiled 1099 issue been corrected with the IRS so that I can now file my taxes? Please let me know. Regards, Greg L Mar 28 2018 the accountant wrote. Greg, Thanks for the e-mail. After April 17 and before May 1, I will be correcting 1099s. You should get a corrected one showing $0. You should be able to file your return. (Name Redacted), CPA, CFP® One poignant note: When we took possession of our home it turned out from documents the tenant left in the house with all their trash, that the co-applicant had a credit score in the mid 500's, and the primary had a very short work history. We also found a letter from a previous landlord threatening the tenants with eviction.
