Update. 4 days after the deal was closed.
I received a call from the GM at LHM Dodge Avondale.
He was very nice and expressed concern that I was not 100% satisfied.
After a discussion about what happened from both of our perspectives he made an incredibly generous offer to buy the car back. I declined. I felt like we both had what we wanted from the deal.
The unfortunate thing I learned from this "internet" deal was that I should have gotten the purchase agreement earlier in the process. I could have prevented this entire episode if I would have treated this like an typical in-person automobile purchase. We all know this, but verbal agreements, e-mails and texts mean absolutely nothing when it comes to buying a car. It is easy to use these types of communication when you are buying a vehicle over the internet. Hopefully others can learn from my error. It turns out that the only record they have of this deal is the first purchase agreement they sent me that contained the dealer added options. No record was kept of any of the other communications.
The GM indicated that he would look in to his internet sales processes and put in place measures to make sure this didn't happen again. I appreciated that. Hopefully it will prevent a future misunderstanding.
So, in the end, everyone wins. LHM sold a car, I got the car, the internet purchasing process will be improved, and finally, you, the next car buyer, will be smarter than I was.
