| - I've been here a lot, even before this location opened in 2007. The animals I have adopted here have been great, and I'm working on my seventh.
Please note this posting is much like the one I left for the east valley location, but much of it applies. My main hope is that some of this info helps someone.
Some things I've learned going here:
The employees tend to be rude; yes, but I've seen how they're treated by other customers - there's a reason for the glass window partitions. Just suck it up, remember you're doing it for the animals and you'll get through it.
They open up at 11am daily; not so much - Monday yes, Tuesday through Sunday at 10:30am for shots and paperwork. They close at 6pm, but you need to either be in-line or done by 5:30, otherwise you may be told "not enough time."
There's nothing but Pit Bulls and Chihuahuas; yup, but not always, to keep the shelter running with space for new dogs, rescue agency's are allowed to adopt animals out one hour after they're available - you the public get first dibs..
They have lotteries for animals?; yup, highly popular animals, puppies, kittens, expensive breeds; know your animals A# (don't ever use the kennel number) the A# is just that, it's either typed or written on the kennel paper with a brief description. It's like a serial number that stays with the animal for life, have that number in hand when the shelter opens, rush the counter window and don't leave until you have verified that there is no lottery and then run to the back to "receiving" to have the animal pulled and you fill out the paper work. Sometimes the employees allow you to adopt the animal right there at the front - pay and you're done, not always though, the policy is to have the animal and you play to make sure you want them/like them and vice versa. See the next paragraph about strays.
They won't let you interact/tell you information on strays? Yup, strays are considered OPP - other peoples property, and are required for a 72 business (shelter hours) hour hold. This gets tricky, get the A#, go to either the front "business office" or the "receiving" (door before business office desk) ask the employees when the animal is up for adoption, not all cards are updated in a timely manner, and the animal may already have become adoptable. Brown holds, Court holds, Rabies Quarantines (animals who have bit or scratched someone), are birds of a different feather. Rabies quarantines are held for 10 business days, and are returned to the owner unless there is none, or the owner rescinds their ownership. Brown holds can be pending notification of owner (microchip, out of state license, waiting on a rescue to eval etc). It doesn't hurt to ask, but don't expect a lot of information.
How old are puppies/kittens when adoptable? Typically 8 weeks, if not of age, they are placed in foster homes until then.
What are the fees (fees for adoption)? they vary, and for me to try to list them is a serious disservice to you. Know that the adoption fee includes spay/neuter, all age related shots, rabies shot (unless it's a puppy/kitten), and a license (dogs only) Best time to get a deal/low price on any animal? Summer, typically May through October, cats sometimes free, and dogs/puppies $20+/-. It varies, but that's my experience.
I've lost my pet, will they be here? Maybe yes, maybe no; Cats are $96 to surrender, no ands, ifs, or buts. Best time to check is after 3pm, this is when the last truck has come in, there's a chance the animal will be dropped after, but won't be able to be seen until the next day anyways. Regardless, if your animal ends up here expect to pay up to $20 a day your animal was here in fees. If your animal has no collar expect to pay for a microchip (supposedly it's a law). If your animal is not spayed or neutered, yup, you guessed it, you have to pay for that too. West Valley cities lost animals come here. But if you're animal has been picked up, ran, or somehow ended up in Tempe or east of there they could be at MCACC East (Rio Salado Parkway and the 101) or AZ Humane in North Phoenix. Apache Junction and San Tan are either in A.J. or Pinal County Animal Care. Give it a week or more, try going daily after three, it takes a while for pets to be captured or turned in. Animals are adoptable three days after turned in. (unless injured or temperament test failed).
Is this a no kill facility? No, I can't say anything more without using profanity. Do animals get vet checks before being adoptable?; NO!, you will receive a list of vets that will do a free vet check - as some of the reviews state some animals may be sick, you have the option to return or keep them.
Last but not the least, Halo Animal Rescue works out of this location. They're the agency that helps out adopt out most of the adoptable animals. They also have a satellite facility at metro center mall (under one woof) and one in a Scottdale Petsmart at miller and camelback roads in Scottdale.
