| - I'm not sure why I have a strange attraction to New York-style delis and bakeries, especially the old school ones. Mile high sandwiches, knishes, babkas, rugelachs, black and white cookies, seven layer cookies, etc. Yes, to all.
Carlo's Bakery hails from Hoboken, New Jersey (close enough to N.Y.) and a famous name is attached to it. The bakery looks old school in an updated sort of way. The storefront is actually smaller than I imagined it would be so I can understand the long lines of the past. The hype is gone so no lines anymore.
My picks from here missed the mark in terms of taste and execution. And it's overpriced for what you get. If I have to pay inflated prices it should at minimum taste good. The total amount paid for three items with tax was $11.45.
-The Black & White Cookie was too sweet. This might be more of a "it's not you, it's me" kinda preference thing.
-The Seven Layer Cookie was super tiny & was more jam flavored, with no hint of almonds at all.
-The Lobster Tail was good but the crunchy exterior verged on leaning stale. It didn't have a fresh crunch nor do I know if it's supposed to so I'm kind of mixed on this one. The filling is similar to Beard Papa's but I prefer B.P.'s one.
Pretty much a one and done for me. The Venetian has many & better dessert options to choose from & this one is on the bottom of my list unfortunately.
If you must try, I'll recommend the Lobster Tail but be prepared for a mixed bag experience.
