| - Like any activity, a little planning makes a world of difference. Take the Ferry....ignore all the whiners about line-ups and crowds.....but arrive early. If possible on a summer day and especially on a weekend, get to the ferry docks before 10am. I've often gone at 7am just because it's the best place to ride your bike. Take a picnic, or eat at either the Island cafe or The Rectory on Ward's Island. The first is less expensive, the latter has Toronto's best outdoor patio bar none! Relax. Be respectful of those who live on Ward's Island. Remember, it IS their home...they are not a tourist attraction. Take your bike or good walking shoes. Go swimming...yes, there are excellent beaches. Some you need a bathing suit, others you just need the nerve NOT to wear a bathing suit. Either way, the water is lovely. On the ferry ride over, listen to those around you....the first timers....the kids giddy with excitement....and appreciate how extraordinarily lucky we are to have this in our back yard, so to speak. I've been going there since the early 70's, and this year I've gone over more than any other year. It truly is Toronto's jewel.
