| - Just wrapped up 10 nights (again).
The room: The Fab room I was in was pretty average. Vinyl floors, decent linens, and a bathroom that hasn't been updated in 30 years. The upside is the rooms are fairly good sized. The downside is you can hear your neighbors, so when the party crowd comes in from LA on the weekend you hear all of it. What evens it out is they consistently have the lowest rates on this part of the strip, so you can be in the middle of everything. But don't expect the same quality of Caesars Palace for that dirt cheap rate.
The food: abysmal. The coffee shop remains closed, so the only breakfast choices before 7AM is the food court. Not optimal if you need to be somewhere by 8. Otherwise, the buffet opens at 7, Carlos & Charlies and Margaritaville open at 8. Carlos & Charlie's is terrible. Margaritaville is good but pricey. I ate at the steakhouse bar one night and wasn't very impressed. Depending upon the night it's not hard to pay more for breakfast or dinner than you did for your room. Better food choices are next door at The Linq.
The casino: drink service was fairly good, but the slots are tighter than they used to be.
Observations: The elevators are a study in how the place is run. They're old and worn out. So in the past year they've started to re-do the interior, using a Formica that's inexpensive but should wear fairly well. But they didn't do the front panels of the cars, so with very few exceptions you're looking at a 20 year old button panel that's been scrubbed down one too many times with several buttons that don't work and the whole thing rattles and makes you question whether it will work or not. You wish they would just do it right and completely re-do the elevators (in contrast, Caesars completely overhauled the scary Imperial Palace elevators and now they're modern, fast, and look great) but instead they try to incrementally fix things on the cheap.
Tips: use the self check-in kiosk to save time. You can check out on the internet using your smart phone, which saves more time. The earlier in the day you check in, the better your chance of not getting a lousy room, but if you're in at a low rate, you'll probably get a view of a wall or the air conditioning unless you pay for an upgrade.
Overall, the two things that made me the most angry comes down to what they did to food and beverage and the elevators. If I could get someone to wait on me without having to dress up after 9PM or if I wanted breakfast before 7 that wasn't served on paper plates and could get it at the Flamingo, I'd feel a whole lot better than I do.
EDIT: I forgot about the "resort" fee. It's supposed to include WiFi. I couldn't get a WiFi signal in my room to find out if that's true or not.
