| - Many of us Montrealaise commute around Montreal daily, using the metro (in the winter months, anyway, when we're not voraciously cycling the city). The metro system is an entity all its own, with various moods, seasons and looks, depending on where and when you are. The longer you live here, the better known are its nuances.
For visitors to the city, it's an easily navigable system (for even the newest of noobs), even for first-time Anglophone visitors who might feel like they're in a foreign land. If you can understand colour, you can understand the Montreal metro system. Colour-blind Anglophone noobs might, however, might be SOL. haha
The histories behind the metro system and its various stations are really interesting - and every station has its own distinct artistic aesthetic - the key word here is colour. My favourite station is probably Champ-de-Mars, which is flooded with multi-coloured light from its array of solid stained glass windows - this is one of the closest metro stations to Old Montreal. Berri-UQAM, one of the main central hubs, is probably the station that sees the most sketchy behavior but overall I have felt pretty safe taking the metro, even alone by myself at night, even alone by myself and drunk out of my tree at night (OK, that was just once). I have been groped on the metro once by a drunk, piss-drenched old guy but ultimately, he was harmless and I just switched cars at the next stop after yelling at him. #citylife
Life is getting better in the underground city of Montreal, too - the fancy, new Azur metro cars are being rolled out one by one and they are beautiful. Always a treat when one pulls up to your stop and you get on, feeling like you're on an episode of the Jetsons. Overall, the cycling option is the BEST way to get around Montreal, but if you can't bike, metro is the way to go.
