  • (The heading of this post says I live in Nebraska; I actually live in Wisconsin, not sure how that happened! I've delayed writing this review, as I don't like to harm anyone's business. But potential customers have a right to know about our experience with Yankee Classic Floors this past summer. We had had a water leak in the water line for our ice maker, and it caused quite a bit of damage before it was visible, including to our hardwood kitchen floor (which flows into the great room). Our insurance company sent an excellent remediation company. Their usual floor refinishers were unavailable for some time, so they subcontracted the job to Yankee Classic Floors. One of the owners came to our house, asked questions, took notes, etc. She warned us that the freshly-refinished floor would not match the color of the adjacent (undamaged) flooring until it had had several years to age, and we assured her that we knew that and weren't concerned about it. We had to leave our house -- and find places for our pets -- for several days while the floor was done. When we returned, we were shocked. Of course the color didn't match, and we had understood that, but the finish was entirely different from the rest of the flooring, and worse yet, the sanding was extremely rough, would have made it very hard to keep the kitchen floor clean, and there were big 'tunnels' where the sanding drum had been allowed to sit running (this is what the remediation company told us must have happened). In addition, the workers had not done any of the 'containment' that was in the contract; sawdust everywhere, as well as black handprints on the walls. It was obvious the floor would have to be re-done, and we definitely didn't want a company which had done such a bad job in the first place to do it over. The remediation company agreed with us. However, Wisconsin law protects the business, but not the customer; there is a 'right to cure' law. The same woman-owner met with us at our house along with two supervisors from the remediation company. At first she wouldn't admit there was a problem, but the supervisors showed her and she couldn't disagree. Then she started to talk about a date to do them over again, and my husband and I said we did not want Yankee to do them again, we had no confidence in the quality of their work. She became very unprofessional, and quickly said they would put a lien on our house. It was the remediation company's responsibility to solve the issue, and they had the insurance money; my husband and I couldn't negotiate a settlement. It took some time for that settlement to be worked out, but in the meantime we received increasingly-threatening letters from Yankee Classic Floors. I cannot recommend this company: The quality if their work was dreadful and their business practices very unprofessional.
