From first sip to last straw slurp each tiki cocktail here boasts fantastic tropical flavors and each drink was better than the next. My fiancé and I are slowly becoming tiki connoisseurs and were excited to see this place pop up in Phoenix. Hula's had become tired and played out (quickly!) and we were looking for something new and different. Let me say - the first few reviews on here deterred us from going...I'm a bartender and meet a lot of different people often...I met a group of women who had just come from UnderTow and while ordering drinks from me swore up and down it was a great experience and the drinks were fantastic and I just 'HAD' to go. I'm thinking....ok is this the tiki drink talking or what? Ah what the hell....what can it hurt? The reservations concept was a little bit of a pain in the ass. Called twice no answer, didn't leave a voicemail but texted instead. Had to send 2 follow up texts in order to get a response. Once I did they text back w/ my choice of two 70min time slots on Friday night. Perfect! We had 4 stools right up at the bar. The first thing I do when sitting at the bar is try to find a purse hook. I hate holding my purse while trying to sit as comfortably as I can on a stool at a bar..or setting it on an eating/drinking surface...gross. No purse hooks. MEH! Got over it faster than I could grab for the menu and start reading because the ambiance really had me in a fun mood. There are only about 30 seats in the place so if you've been meaning to check this place out MAKE RESERVATIONS! Finding the place is a bit of a pain in the ass too. There's no sign outside and the bar is in the basement of Sip Coffee Bar. Sip doesn't have signs inside to point in the direction of the tiki bar so you either have to ask....or hope they tell you "look for the pirate ship hanging from the ceiling...below it are the stairs" when they text you for reservations. Whatever...just point me in the direction of these drinks I've been hearing about I'm anxious to try them dammit. I sat right in front of what appeared to be a mixing station. In small jars sat dried fruit and aromatic bitters used for the different cocktails. They even have passion fruit bitters. What the what!?! Just watching the bartender concoct all the drinks was fun. The ambiance is cool with the sound of hula music and waves crashing....it feels like you're inside a sinking ship...(ahh so its not just a clever name). The tchotchke's give it that authentic tiki feel and the low lighting made me feel as though I had discovered some hidden treasure of a bar that nobody really knows about. Moving on! First we ordered a round of pain killers. They're not on the menu, but a staple in tiki bar land. Freshly ground nutmeg sprinkled on top put us over the edge. The flavors of pineapple and smooth rum....a hint of coconut...but not so much that it overpowered the rum....perfection! After that first round, we knew this was going to be quite an experience. Then on to a fog cutter, the barro negro (nice and smokey!), the stirred bird, and a jet pilot. Never mind we could barely walk out of the place when we were done (thank GOD for Uber).....but each drink had more flavor than the next. Phoenix is waring out the handcraft cocktail concept quickly. It was great to try something new, with a new feel, and new flavors that isn't played out. We will def be back to UnderTow. Thank you for really owning what a Tiki Bar is all about UnderTow! PS - thanks for letting the 4 of us take an empty table for 2 so we could stay and order one more round. We appreciated the great hospitality. Bartenders and hostess were all superb!!
