| - Let me start by saying that if you're looking for authentic, hearty, quality "Midwesterner" food (or what I've dubbed a combination of lumberjack-style eats and German cookin') , The Old Fashioned is the place to go! It seems that most (if not all) of their food and beverage distributors are Wisconsin-based, which is nice for someone visiting the state's capitol. It has the look and feel of a Door County pub, without the bad cell reception and northern accents.
The food was tasty--the burger came out hot and the salad came out chilled. My husband claims that the old fashioned classic burger was one of the best burgers he's had in a long time (although he drowns pretty much everything in tabasco, so....your opinion may vary). I got a mixed greens salad which was basically like a salad you could get at any restaurant.
I gave the restaurant only four stars, however, because of a couple of things:
1. Very (VERY) poor selection for vegetarian and/or vegan patrons. Since the place isn't at all advertised as being vegetarian or vegan friendly, I guess we should have expected this, but usually you can find at least a few things that (with slight modificafions) are safe. Not the case here. All of the appetizers are meat or cheese based, and only a few entree selections (all salads) can really be considered a substantial entree after removing the chicken, fish, or beef. Seriously, vegans BEWARE. in the land of cheese, this place really makes no exceptions.
2. As a former waitress and bartender at multiple sports bars, I know how annoying it can be when people complain about the noise level in a restaurant (if you wanted a quiet evening, you should've STAYED AT HOME)! However, this was hands down the loudest restaurant I have ever been in. The place was almost full (but no wait list), and the tables were fairly close together, which wouldn't have been a problem if the music wasn't blaring in the background. My husband and I couldn't even have a constructive conversation because we couldn't hear each other over the sounds of our neighbors yelling across their tables trying to be heard over the noise. That DEFINITELY took away from the backwoods, mom-and-pop atmosphere of this place.
All in all, I wouldn't personally care to go back, but if I had guests in town looking to experience "Real Wisconsin," this would definitely be a contender.
