| - I fell in love with some of the traditional Hawaiian plate lunch establishments last year on the Big Island. Great amounts of food, cooked with love and made with local ingredients, for dirt cheap prices.
So while it is cool that Vegas has tons of plate lunch restaurants, I haven't been happy with any of them. And this includes the well reviewed ones like Rice Trax, Island Flavor, Ross J's, L & L, and many of the others. The food is universally very fatty and low quality (to make a lower price point) and for the most part have destroyed my stomach.
But then I tried 808 Hawaii Mixed Plate and I was in heaven and it brought me back to all those great little places on the Big Island. This place is truely a gem. Food cooked with love and actual skill, great ingredients, and people that give a shit about what they put in front of you.
Everything I have tried has been excellent. Pork, chicken, beef, fish, they do it all well. And they don't think it's weird when I ask to substitute rice - in this case they only have salad. But what a great salad it is - fresh greens (not iceburg), tomato, cucumber, carrot, and homemade dressing that tastes similar to balsamic but something more complex.
This gem is definitely worth driving across town for when you're in the mood for a plate lunch. It will seriously make you wish you were back in Hawaii, and you'll find yourself planning your next vacation there while you're eating.
