| - Showed up for our Saturday night 9:30 reservation and were told it would be just a minute- it ended up being more like 15, just a beginning of the bad service we would receive that night. After finally being seated we took a look at the wine list and decided to order the Red Sangria.
Since we weren't super hungry our plan was to just get a bunch of the small plates for our group of four. We ordered five plates (the grilled eggplant, white ceviche, bacon wrapped date, risotto and chicken skewers), thinking this should be plenty. Then we waited, waited, waited some more, all the while having to practically shout at each other across the table since the place was so loud- even after the place emptied out a bit, the volume of their music drowned us out. Finally our sangria came, it was alright, nothing great.
When the food arrived we were not impressed, the bacon wrapped date and the ceviche were both decent, but nothing amazing. The risotto however was undercooked, the chicken skewer (actually ended up being a SINGLE chicken skewer) was overcooked and dry, the eggplant so-so.
Being from LA I am more than used to, and perfectly willing, to pay extra for great ambiance with just OK food. Or to have great food and less than mediocre service. However Julian Serrano had nothing to redeem one bad factor from another. Quite disappointing.
